Fasting Framework

What Breaks a Fast?

In the ordinary dietary sense, consuming calories ends a zero-calorie fast. But online arguments about tiny amounts of calories often mix different goals and definitions.

Start with the purpose

A fast for a medical test follows the clinician or laboratory's instructions. A religious fast follows its own rules. A weight-management fasting schedule is a different context again. Do not substitute internet fasting rules for medical preparation instructions.

Water, coffee and tea

Plain non-caloric drinks are commonly discussed within intermittent-fasting routines, but additives such as sugar, cream or milk add energy. Whether a specific program permits them is a program rule rather than a universal biological threshold.

Safety first: Intermittent fasting is not appropriate for everyone. Johns Hopkins advises checking with a clinician before starting and specifically cautions children and teens, pregnant or breastfeeding people, people with type 1 diabetes taking insulin, and people with a history of eating disorders. Seek medical guidance for medicines or conditions affected by food timing.
